Christmas Day Volunteers - 12/29/2002

Thank you to the many volunteers who helped make this
Christmas the best ever for the 351 poor and homeless that were fed and
clothed at our Hollywood location. Each person received a hot chicken
dinner, healthy snacks and fruit along with blankets, sleeping bags, and
bus tokens.

I joined Food On Foot to try give back to the community and help others, but it turns out that it means as much to me, as it does to the people we are helping.

My favorite Food On Foot experience was last Christmas Eve when we walked around at midnight. The happy shock on people's faces and their appreciation for our mere presence and concern was touching and amazing and in keeping with the true spirit of the holidays.
I'm looking forward to doing it again this year.

Food on Foot is a selfish experience for me. It is a chance for me to give financially and physically; to feel gratitude for all that I have; to get a weekly reality check -- it's too easy to get sucked into the 'keeping up with the Jones' mentality. Being a part of Food on Foot reminds me that each and every person is valuable and, regardless of his/her circumstances, deserving of my respect and compassion (and a hot meal!)! Every thank you, every smile confirms that I'm giving my time to something that matters.

All of the feedings that I have attended are very special. But the one that stands out in my mind is the one when My friends and I were able to get some of the wish list items (bicycles, sleeping bags, etc.) to the homeless. I just remembered their smiles and how happy they were.

Food on Foot is an opportunity to be useful in a visible and direct way. I like the feeling of community created by people with a common -- and positive -- purpose. I'm most touched by the children, and try to bring them things to play with -- crayons, bubbles, yo yos -- to pass what must seem the interminable waiting time.

I really enjoy the interaction with the people we serve. I like to arrive early and talk with the people in line, ask them how they've been. I think we all as human beings have a need to have someone care. And I want them to know that I care.

Every week is different. But my heart breaks every time there are too many people show up. First, because some people go away hungry. But also because there are so many people in need. It reminds me to be humble and never take for granted what God has blessed me with.

I began volunteering with Food on Foot because I saw so many homeless people
where I work and live (Hollywood and West Hollywood) who were without shoes.
I wanted to start a drive for shoes, socks, and backpacks and donate them to
an organization. When I found out about Food on Foot, it seemed like a
perfect match for what I wanted to do. Over the past few months, I've
collected 460 pairs of shoes, 175 pairs of socks, and 30 backpacks and duffel
bags from my friends, coworkers, synagogue members, and corporations. Giving
back to the community in this way is vastly rewarding because I get to see
the tangible results of my efforts and those of my friends.

I like volunteering for Food on Foot because its a great way to directly help someone (as opposed to just mailing a check to some organizatoin) without being a real time consuming long-term volunteer commitment. For me, its great to see the smile on someone's face because they appreciate the fact that I took an hour out of my weekend to show up and help out a bit.

I always wanted to volunteer for a homeless organization. When I heard about
Food on Foot I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I really feel that what
we're doing is making a difference in people's lives.

Giving back is important to me. Food on Foot is one of the ways I can do
that. It's quite rewarding to actually take part and see the results of all
the hard work. Food on Foot is a great program.

Food on Foot is more than just food for the hungry. It is about building a sense of community and its what has kept me involved for over two years.

Food on Foot provides a easy way one person can make a big impact on poverty.
It's so easy to donate time and/or money and best of all 100% of donations goes to those in need. No red tape.

From what we get we can make a good living, but from what we give we can make a great
life.

Thank you,

By no means a novice to community service, I feel Food on Foot provides a rare
opportunity for "hands on" contribution to the community. With its commitment
to a weekly feeding for the homeless or impoverished, this organization gives
hope to not only those who it feeds and clothes, but to those who believe that
we are our brother's keeper and we can make a difference. Thank you Food on
Foot for allowing me to be a part of this service.
Sincerely,

Marcia Withers

We've participated in Food on Foot for the last nine months. Food on Foot
gives us an opportunity to do more than just write a check. We feel Food on
Foot is an important and gratifying community service experience, providing
us with the chance to give back to others. Thanks, Jay, for the
opportunity!

I spent my first Thanksgiving in LA volunteering with Food on Foot. I appreciate the fact that it is a grassroots, non-profit organization committed to feeding the people in what has become my new home. I would encourage everyone that comes to this site to make a donation!!!!

I love helping out FOF because I like to give something back. The homeless need our help. I always compare my problems to theirs and I see how small and insignificant mine seem next to theirs. In a way, I find it therapeutic.

I came to Food On Foot to help the less fortunate during the holiday season and walked away with an amazing feeling I
didn't expect. I saw people who wanted others to believe that they mattered, and even though they have
had a rough time in life, they are still humans. I understood that this
wasn't a once a year thing anymore. We are needed all year around. So I have
found one hour a week to show these people that I want to do as much as I can,
because if I was ever down on my luck and had no one to turn to, there is Food On
Foot and people like me who care.

Thank again Jay, Laura

After volunteering with Food on Foot on Christmas Day last year, I
realized there is a big difference between writing a check to support a
charity and actually being involved in a charity. I support Food on Foot
because of the unique way it is structured... there is no red-tape. I
give money and see it go directly to the less fortunate. I give time and
know that I'm making a difference in the lives of the people we feed. I
give because I can!

Pam Goldwasser 8/11/02

My name is Pam Goldwasser and I have been volunteering with Food on Foot
since November 2001.

I enjoy giving back to the community and I feel that volunteering helps to
put balance in my life.

Food on Foot is a committed, well-organized volunteer group that I plan to support for years to come.

FOF keeps its promises: it promises to feed the homeless every weekend, and it has kept that promise for 333 weeks. And, it keeps its promise to its volunteers: in just one hour of service each week, you can make a difference that matters by helping to distribute food. The commitment is doable and the organization is honorable with 100% of all donations going directly to those who will benefit.

Cheers!
